Tubes or Tips will be an integral part of the process of decorating your cakes. Tips are just small simple metal cones that are used to squeeze the icing or some other type of medium through to form different shapes and designs.
To get a particular size or shape for your design you will have to look at the opening of the tip. The tip opening will give you an idea of exactly what you can expect once you start to pump out your icing.
There are really just 7 basic decorating tip groups that you will need to familiarize yourself with initially. They are: round, star, leaf, drop flower, rose, basketweave, and specialized.
As a new decorator you will want to ensure that you have at least two tips from the first five groups that I mentioned.
As you become better at icing your cakes you will naturally want to expand your collection to include tips from the other groups.
